I love Sapolsky, he is brilliant. But I must say, this tells us nothing about the causality of depression. Is it not easier to prevent issues than to treat them? Clearly depressed people need treatment in the meantime, but there is also a noteworthy link between perceived social rank and depression (see Social Gradient Theory of Health). Interesting stuff.

  2. Have you seen the full lecture? That’s exactly what he says.

  3. sapolsky is great however i’d like to point out that not everyone gets the depression i’ve had. i’ve lost and been sad, sure. i didn’t get depressed. when i could no longer function for 6 years that was depression. i cannot relate to people. i cannot learn. i cannot do anything fast. i cannot do physical activities i am in actual pain every day. you don’t feel real pain from the kind of depression stated “everyone gets”. all said

  4. agreed. i know what it’s like to have depression. it’s too real to be true.

  5. No clue where you’re watching it, but I linked it to someone a few minutes ago and the whole thing was there in public.

  6. I like this, but I hate the fact that I can’t see the complete lecture as it says the video has been made for private view only. It irritates me when I hearing things out of context.

  7. Very helpful lecture. What a great teacher, very effective.
